Possibly the Worst Week of my Life

because the shoulder injury was, according to my doctor, a red herring.  On the Sunday I found the pain, which had already affected both of my arms and hands, was affecting my legs too. I woke up on Monday morning and found that I couldn’t move my arms or legs because I was in such pain. That was really frightening.

I had to force myself to try and move my limbs and little by little I could move them a bit more and try and think through the pain. Andy had to help me sit up and see if I could stand. I had a little mobility but it was more of the hobbling around kind and it was very painful to use stairs.

Resting didn’t help because as soon as I lay down I found that I
couldn’t move my limbs again. Somehow Andy managed to get me down to
the doctors who prescribed strong painkillers, which didn’t help, and
ordered blood tests. The doctor told me that sometimes these things
happen and we don’t understand why, which didn’t help much but what
more could she say.

This continued until Thursday when I woke up to find that my legs
weren’t as painful as they’d been before and I could move them more.
Friday came and my arms also felt a bit better. We went back to the
doctors and surgery and a different doctor told me that the blood work
had shown rates of inflammation which were off the scale. The test for
arthritis came back negative. Whew!

They’re hoping it’s a virus, and so am I because that will mean I’m
over the worst of it and it won’t come back, but I need more blood
tests done.

I’m off work for another two weeks to recover. I can get around but
I can’t really use my right arm as it tires easily and  I’ve still got
various dull aches everywhere. I’m very tired and run down but
hopefully I’m on the mend. Andy has been fantastic. I couldn’t have got
through this without his love and support.

As for the stomach things, the pain killers made me constipated
which complicated that.So I don’t know what’s going on with my stomach
at the mo. Oh and my arms aren’t well enough for knitting which sucks big time!

I’ve been typing for far too long, going to sign off now. Thanks for all of the lovely comments, they mean a great deal to me.

  1. Marie, that sounds absolutely frightening. I’m so glad that you’re slowly feeling better and I hope that you’ll be back to knitting and normal life as soon as possible!

  2. Tell your body you’ve heard its message and it can quit sending those pain signals now … I’ll be sending good thoughts over your way!

  3. Marie, that is CRAZY. Completely insane! I can’t believe the doctors just said these things can happen sometimes! It’s not like you had some little random bug bite or something. Maybe it was some severely pinched nerve? Well, I am glad you are starting to feel a bit better and able to move around some more. You might want to see an acupuncturist, actually. I think one might be able to help you with the mobility and be able to give you some additional information. You TAKE CARE, and Andy, too!

  4. Hi Mariko,
No it’s not a trapped nerve at all. And my mobilty is a lot better than it was. I haven’t got the pain that I did from Monday – Thursday. I can walk around, take the stairs etc. fine abeit a little slowly at times because I feel very tired and drained.
I’m with the Doctors on the virus theory. Anyway in just over a week’s time I should know more. I’m hoping to be able to try knitting something on Thursday! 🙂

  5. Marie,
I have been following your blog and feeling guilty for not letting you know I was sending good thoughts your way, and heavenward. I’m another IBS sufferer, and know how “fun” the tests are. You did not need these additional difficulties. Rest and get better! If we miss your voice too much, we can always listen to one of your prior podcasts again. The one with the gallery needs multiples listenings anyway! Thanks for all your wonderful work!

  6. What a horrible thing to have to go through. I hope that dreadful virus hits the road and leaves you alone, soon! Take good care of yourself. Lots of get well wishes coming at you from Chicago!

  7. Marie, I’m so sorry to read all of this; take it easy, feel better, and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the doctor has a better answer soon!

  8. So sorry you are going through this! I have an autoimmune disease, Behcet’s Syndrome, which took two years to diagnose. I went through similar pain and inflammation. Even though it is still there, knowing what you’re dealing with helps a great deal. I do hope it was a virus and the worst is over. Whatever it is or was, I hope you feel better soon. We miss Knitcast and you!

  9. Marie, I’m doing my best to send healing energy from over the pond. What an awful set of experiences you’ve had recently! It gives new meaning to my mantra “I’m not in charge.” When it comes to illness, it’s true powerlessness for the most part.
Please do whatever you can to help your body heal. Not knitting must be very distressing. With no knitting to relax you, it will be more complicated to heal, I’d think.
Hang in there. This, too, shall pass. I’m crossing my fingers that it’s a virus, too!

  10. Did your blood tests include a test for Lyme Disease? That’s what your symptoms sound like to me. Lyme Disease is endemic in Massachusetts, but it’s showing up all over the U.S. now. It’s crucial to get treatment for Lyme if you have it because the pathogens can infect and damage organs and other tissues throughout the body.

  11. Glad to hear the mobility is better, but what a horrible ordeal! What about Meningitis? Anyway, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

  12. Dear Marie,
I so hope you’re feeling better. You’ve brought a lot of joy into my knitting-obsessed life and I wish you all the best.

  13. Hey Marie,
I hope things are looking up and you’re feeling better now! These bright fuzzy feet must have cheered you up as well. I’m aching for a new episode of KnitCast, I’ve actually been listening to all the episodes over again:-) I love listening to them while I’m knitting, really keeps me going!
All the best to you and keep up the great work,
    Julia from Hamburg, Germany
