Making Monday – Finishing Touches

It’s finally finished.

All done!

As you can see I decided on swirly, thanks for the encouragement Mimi!, for the button. Friday I bought the snap fasteners from the fab haberdashery stall in the market and I finally sat down to sew one in on Saturday night. I also remembered that after 12 years of making garments I’d ordered some labels. I’d been meaning to do it for years and in December I just googled and found Woven Labels UK. They were pretty reasonable, £9.99 for 36 and it was simple to choose a label design although the cat with yarn is possibly better suited for knitted items. As you can see I choose a purple ribbon with silver thread. I’m hoping it won’t be scratchy against my skin. Choosing what to write on the label was more difficult. I really wanted to come up with something innovative and original but I couldn’t 😉 I don’t know if I’ll stick with “Marie Made” for my next set but I’m happy with it at the moment. The only other name I’ve ever had in mind for labels was “By Marie”.

Pack of labels

The only downside about the labels is that I suck at sewing them. I made a real hash of the first one and it wasn’t very centered. This one isn’t a great deal different but it’s still better. It’s just really tricky to sew something like that in without the stitches showing up on the cardi. I’m not 100% sure how long it’ll stay in so I may have resew it sooner rather than later.

She’s Electric has moved on quite a bit. I’ve been knitting on it while trying to catch up with Grey’s Anatomy. I’m currently in the early eps of season five. A month ago I’d only ever seen the first series and I’m trying to catch up to the current season 8. So that’s a serious lot of tv watching. Seriously.

So SE has passed the putting sleeve stitches on scrap yarn period and I’m about 2 inches done on the body. I finally agreed on the contrast colour for the waist stitching design and it’s some yarn left over from a previous project that I’ve had stashed for several years. It is perfect and it also required some serious detangling which Doug helped me sort out over the weekend. It’s now organised and wound into two centre pull balls. 🙂

Making Monday – First post of the Year

This blog, Space Craft, is ten years old this month and as part of celebrating and marking that, I’ve decided to set myself a little blogging challenge. From this week onwards I will blog every Monday for a year. It’s a challenge and a bit of a kick up the backside for me. I can always think of stuff to blog about but I rarely get around to writing it. I’m still making things but I don’t document them as often as I could. And well, I’ve had over two months off from blogging as it is 😉 It also means that I can join in with Natalie from The Yarn Yard‘s Making Monday. 🙂

I don’t know if it’s a seasonal thing but now that it’s colder I seem to be spending more of my time knitting than sewing. It could be related to a recent sewing disaster but more on that in another post. Current knitting WIPS are Rose Red by Ysolda and She’s Electric by Ann Weaver. I had intended for She’s Electric to be my Xmas project and I was going to knit as much of it as I could, possibly even finish it, over the Xmas holidays. It didn’t work out that way.

About 11 rows completed on She's Electric

Instead I finished off the Cosmic Pluto top-down cardigan which had been on the needles for about three years, and I didn’t get a great deal further than casting on SE. Incidentally I partly knit the TDRC in some Lamb’s Pride Worsted that I bought way back in Dharma Trading in 2004 when I met Rachael Herron and Mariko for the first time! I’ve just realised that I also bought the LPW in Magenta shade that I’m using for SE at the same time! You can see it in the pic on this archive entry. The Pink skein at the top is the pink I used on the TDRC and the LP just under it is what I’m using on the SE. OMG I’ve just realised that it’s over eight years since I bought that yarn! It’s been in my stash for all that time. Ah well, at least I’m using it now 😉

It’s not photographed that well this time in my 11 rows picture. It’s a lot more vibrant in real life and the old pic is more true to its colour. I could have knit a lot more on this than I have as asides from checking which way your increases are going, it’s mostly stocking stitch. But I bought a red coat in the sales and decided that it was time to pluck the two balls of Debbie Bliss Rialto DK in colour 23012 out of my stash and cast on for a much promised Rose Red beret by Ysolda.

Rose Red Beret in progress

It doesn’t quite match my coat – the coat is more of an orangey red and the yarn is more of a blue red – but they’ll go together fine.

My new coat with my Rose Red for comparison

I’m currently wearing the coat with a scarf from Rowan Biggy Print that I made I-can’t-remember-how-long-ago but I want to make a cowl to go with the coat. I have some yarn in my stash for that but am not sure how long it’ll be before I cast on for that since I have to finish RR first!

I’ve had so many problems with RR though. It’s no fault of the pattern which is very well written, alas it’s all down to me. I have to really focus when knitting it and count my stitches every row. So far I’ve had to rip out lots of rows and in one case rip it right back to the icord start, because I’d made a mistake. I love the way the design is building, it’s gorgeous. It’s just that this isn’t tv watching knitting, at least not for me. And it’s certainly not something I can work on while watching Borgen and keep up with the subtitles! SE is perfectly suited for that but I just haven’t been picking up the needles.

Something else that can take away from crafting time is reading. Since last year I’ve really got back into it with a passion. I love Good Reads and their book reading challenge is great. This year I’ve set myself the target of reading 30 books. That’s mainly because a lot of the books I’ve been reading have been quite long and whereas I can easily whiz my way through 300 pages, it’s a bit harder when it’s over 700. I’ve just finished This Perfect day by Ira Levin which had a really big impact on me, I’ll be thinking about it for a while.

Hip news

My MRI came back clear which means that I haven’t damaged any of the soft tissue in my left hip. I’ve been having physiotherapy since November as all of the slowing down recommended by the GP has meant that my muscles had become very weak. They’re building up more now and I’ve been able to go back to my pilates classes. The impingements haven’t gone away of course, and there will still be things that I can’t do like some movements in pilates. I don’t know when I’ll have to have surgery on them, probably not for a few years anyway, but I’m seeing the surgeon again next week for the MRI follow up.

Bullets and bracelets

Great Hera! They’re changing Wonder Woman’s costume and I don’t think I like it!

Wonder Woman's first costume

I’ve been a Wonder Woman fan practically all my life. I grew up watching Lynda Carter bending metal bars and running around in heels and a basque at Saturday teatimes.

I have too many WW action figures to count and one of my favourite mugs is a large WW breakfast mug.

My mug :-)

I love WW and she was a formative part of my life. Even that time when at about age six I climbed out of my bedroom window on to the flat roof below and tried to climb back up the wall using a net curtain cord. I quickly discovered that I didn’t have her technique.

As a  comic book reader, I’ve always been highly critical of the way female characters are drawn, usually with enormous breasts, and in costumes that are barely there. It’s just as well that Powergirl is strong considering what she’s packing up top.

Any other woman would have back strain and be seeking a breast reduction.  I read Tales of the Teen Titans as a teen and Starfire wore very little which I found quite bizarre.

WW’s knickerline has got quite cut at times which I found annoying but the overall outfit…well…I’m feminist and yet, and yet, I love that old costume.  Maybe it is because it’s so deeply rooted in me.

The tv show got me into comics in a big way and at 38 I’m still buying her title and Ms Marvel and Spider-Woman just as I did when I was a child. Ms Marvel’s costume isn’t  any better either. There’s slightly more coverage now than from her belly button baring outfit from 1977 but it’s still quite high cut.

My first thoughts on seeing the new outfit was  “oh my god, they really want to get that film off the ground, that’s why they’ve done this.” Because it was never really going to be that viable to have an actress running around on the big screen in a swimsuit. Even Halle Berry in that abomination of a movie and abomination to the comic book character film version of Catwoman had trousers of a kind.

So this outfit is going to be more saleable in that regard.  If, and when, a big screen version comes around, I would have prefer to see her in her Amazonian warrior armour. She was doing it years before Zena and that look would work.

This new look is so dated and what is going on with the bracelets? They’ve now been turned into gloves. I’ve always loved WW’s bracelets although in some versions they looked incredibly heavy but then she is a super human so I guess she could the weight. But what they have her in now is appalling and just does look right. Apparently they’ll allow her to leave a Zorroesque W mark on anyone who crosses her. This seems miles away from the bullets and bracelets of old. Guess she won’t lose her powers if a man ties her hands together either. (no, really)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not completely against WW changing her look. Although I hated the change from the glorious golden eagle on her chest to the double W symbol. It was only after I realised the double W had been around for twenty years (changed in 1982 I think) that I finally accepted it. When Diana lost her WW title to Artemis she started wearing a bra and cycling shorts. I hated that.

So, pluses for the new costume are at least she’s got some coverage I guess. Negatives are that it looks 10-20 years out of date. And she hasn’t got proper bracelets.

One of the things that bothers me more than the costume redesign is that they’ve also changed her age. In this time line Wondy didn’t grow up in Themyscira (Paradise Island) for thousands of years. She was taken into hiding at age three and the book’s set twenty years later making her twenty-three.

The new storyline is written by J Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame. I used to read Supreme Power his “sort of” revision of Superman, Batman & WW on Marvel a few years ago.  I do like him as a writer so I’m going to give it a chance. He did some great work on Spider-Man Peter Parker some years back too.

While I was looking for images for this post I found a link to this game which looks pretty good unless you’re trying to fight against Wonder Woman!

Such A Bad Blogger…

I haven’t blogged in over two months! Oh lots of reasons why, mainly due to lack of time, and that’s also why KnitCast is late. The Welsh general election has kept me busy at work and sorting through my various hoardings, desperately trying to downsize has kept me a little busy too.

Last weekend I sorted through twenty years worth of clothes. Yes. TWENTY YEARS! I actually had stuff from far back as 14. Hannah helped me and joked that she could see the various stages I’d been through in life, including the extended Goth period. Which never really went away entirely. I gave 99.9 per cent of it away to charity, Hannah and others had some too. I feel really good about it because now I can buy more clothes with impunity. Ummmm….can’t I?! 🙂

Now onto KnitCast. That’s mainly been delayed because I haven’t quite made the switch from editing audio on a PC to editing audio on a Mac. It’s a bit ironic considering that I am Mac mad and rather evangelical about them! A certain Mac friend of mine is probably laughing at this! Although Macs are superior to PCs, don’t crash as often, don’t really get viruses etc. they also don’t have as many software programs written for them. So my main bug bare is that Nero Wave Editor which I used to use to edit is not available for the Mac. I can’t edit quite as finely with Audacity as I’d like and anyone who’s listened to Knitcast will know how I love my editing. I think though that I may have to worry less about editing since I would like to get a podcast out before the end of the month.

And speaking of podcasting, I’m hoping to record some interviews when I go on holiday to New York in July. I’ll be there for the first week of July and I have some ideas for interviews and I’ll be contacting people soon about those. However I do want to leave the majority of my trip for shopping! It’ll be my third visit to NYC and my second trip to the Garment District. I’m really looking forward to it! Let’s hope I don’t go over my baggage weight allowance on the way home!

I wasn’t quite sure exactly what I was going to blog about today but Jeni has tagged me so I’m going to finish with the Seven Random Things About Me…warning they are very random!

* I love Woody Allen films, although I tend to prefer his earlier, funnier ones! (in joke!) My favourites are Manhattan and Annie Hall. I can never choose between the two and have watched both far too many times to count.

* I’ve wanted to live in America since I was a kid. I intend to fulfill this dream one day 🙂

* Madonna – I’ve been a fan of hers for nearly twenty two years! I still have lace gloves from my teenage years!

* Spring is my favourite season. I love seeing the bulbs come up and trees blossom after a cold winter.

* Nature makes me feel very spiritual. There’s something godlike almost in growing things from seed and I also have a quiet fascination with how numbers appear in nature. However I’m crap at maths!

* I love order but somehow always end up in chaos. I’m incredibly untidy!

* I’m really into astrology. Well ok, I do read several horoscopes each day and pick and choose which bits I like, but I do think there’s more than an element of truth in them.

Now I have to decide whom to tag…I’ll have to think about that and update this later
